TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
TCM is a healing art based on thousands of years of philosophies and culture that encompasses a complete system of medicine within itself and separate from any other. It views each patient as a unique individual and aims to treat the root cause of their problem, as opposed to just treating the disease. The body is seen as a whole organism containing organ systems and pathways called channels and collaterals where Qi and blood flow. When these organ systems are imbalanced, pathways become blocked, or there is an insufficient supply of Qi and blood then pain, illness, or simply feeling un-well are the result. All factors (environmental, dietary, emotional, physical, etc.) are considered when diagnosing a patient and specific treatment principles are then determined and modalities chosen to promote proper supply and flow of Qi and blood - ultimately bringing the body to a state of balance, or homeostasis. Some of the modalities used are Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, diet therapy, cupping, gua sha, Qi gong, and moxibustion. Below you fill find a little more info on the services that I offer.
Acupuncture is the use of very fine, disposable needles inserted at specific points on the body. The needles influence flow of Qi in the channels, unblocking stagnation and promoting balance among the organ systems. It has a wide range of benefits.
Traditional Chinese massage may also be known as Tui Na, which means "push and grasp". Acupressure is another, more modern variation of massage that stimulates acupoints to promote circulation and ease tension.
Cupping is the use of a vessel, usually a glass or silicone cup, that's suction-cupped onto skin. It helps ease tight fascia and muscles, promote circulation, and release heat and toxins from the body.
Gua sha is a procedure where a tool with a soft edge is used to scrape along the skin until redness occurs. This releases heat from the body, brings circulation to the area and can be used to treat pain, fever, and cough, among other things.
It's well-known that diet is an important component in one's overall wellbeing. In TCM, many factors are considered when meal planning from the patient's constitution to the thermal property of the food that would benefit their body-type or condition.
Moxa is a herb also known as mugwort that, when burned, is very warming and penetrating to the body, especially when placed over or near specific acupoints. It has a healing effect due to it's warming property and it's ability to nourish Qi and blood.
TCM has been proven to treat a number of different ailments: asthma, allergies, colds, coughs, digestive disorders, anxiety and depression, gynecological issues, headaches, insomnia, and pain are just a few on the list! My passions lie in treating stress and emotional issues, so treatments tend to be very relaxation focused. I also have aninterest in paediatrics and enjoy applying my knowledge at home with my children!
